What Ishan Khurana designs
Ishan Khurana’s practice at NDTV is four jobs at once: creative direction, real-time broadcast graphics, virtual studio and AR, and generative AI that has to survive a live news hour.
Creative direction
Ishan Khurana sets design strategy, channel branding and show packaging for NDTV, and leads a team of 20 across one national channel and two regional channels.
The Art Director brief is design strategy, channel launches, team leadership, cross-functional collaboration and resource management. Day to day that means primetime packaging and major live events — every election and every Union Budget in his Art Director tenure — taken from concept to air.
Broadcast and real-time graphics
He designs real-time television graphics on Vizrt — Viz Engine 5.3, Viz Artist and Viz Arc — and on Wasp3D, including UDT automation, packaging, election graphics, templates and design systems.
Vizrt and Wasp3D are the two live-graphics platforms he works in. The method is template-driven: scenes and data stay connected, so a breaking-news change is an update, not a rebuild. Adobe Photoshop and After Effects are the offline design tools alongside them.
AR, VR and virtual studio
His virtual-studio work covers AR/VR production, virtual set design with Stype, trackless virtual sets on Wasp3D VSet, and Viz Virtual Studio setup and administration.
On Viz Engine 5.3 he built virtual newsroom sets meant for large camera moves. On the regional launches he built a trackless Wasp3D VSet. Stype is the camera-tracking system named for virtual set design. He also holds 2026 Viz University diplomas in Viz Arc Essentials, Viz Arc Operation, and Viz Virtual Studio Setup and Administration.
Generative AI in daily production
He uses generative AI inside NDTV production — not as a side experiment — to make keyed elements for virtual sets and full-frame graphics, and to keep layout, framing and type consistent.
The tools are Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Runway, Seedance, Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and Grok. Markdown instruction files and AI projects lock layout, framing and fonts, generate Viz VB scripts, and produce consistent keying content. NDTV’s in-house platform, ind.in, sits alongside those specialist tools. He completed Generative AI in Design (Simplilearn SkillUP, 2026) and Elements of AI (University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn, 2 ECTS, 2026).
